Gulf CV format for the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar

There is no official CV format for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait or Bahrain. No government publishes one, and we looked. What follows is common practice in Gulf hiring: employers there tend to expect a photo and a few personal details that would be left off a UK or US CV. UAE labour law does ban discrimination in employment on grounds such as race, religion and national origin.

Sections, in order

  1. Name, role and contact. Phone with country code, email, current city, and LinkedIn if you have it.
  2. Personal facts. Nationality, visa status, driving licence and languages in a small box. Date of birth and marital status are optional. Leave them out if you prefer, since nothing requires them.
  3. Profile. Three lines: role, years of experience (say how many in the Gulf) and your strongest skill.
  4. Licences and certificates. DHA, DoH, MOHAP or SCFHS licences, SCE membership, driving licence classes, safety certificates.
  5. Work experience. Newest first, with the country for each job.
  6. Education and skills. Degree, institute and year. Skills in the job ad's words.

Tips

FAQ

Is a photo required on a CV in Dubai or Saudi Arabia?

No law requires it, and no official guidance exists. A photo is common practice in the Gulf, so most applicants add one.

Should I write my religion or marital status?

Not needed. UAE Labour Law bans discrimination on religion, and nothing requires marital status. Leave both off unless an application form asks.

How long should a Gulf CV be?

Two pages is common practice for experienced candidates. Keep it to one page if you have little experience.

Should I write my visa status?

Yes, if you are already in the country. Recruiters in the Gulf often filter on availability and visa transfer. (Common practice.)
